What you see at school dances is people hugging to music, not dancing.Slow dancing was once known as slow rhythm dancing in some circles, and is more popularly known now as social foxtrot. If you really want to be a good dancer, take some ballroom lessons, and modify the ballroom foxtrot to the social style. Some ballroom studios will even teach you how to make the proper modifications. But for school functions, it isn't needed.I'd suggest, though, that you avoid the most common mistakes: if your hold is symmetric, with both of your hands at her waste and both of her hands on your shoulders, your feet will be in line with each other, and that leads to stepped-on toes. If you put her right hand in your left, and your right under her right shoulder blade, your right foot will align with a spot between her feet, and her feet will do the same, leading to a more comfortable postion and fewer awkward moments. With each of you offset slightly to the left of the other, it'll be much more comfortable.
